Roto-Cone Vacuum Dryers Overview
Roto-Cone Vacuum Dryers are one of the most energy efficient, cost effective and environmentally safe methods for indirect drying all solids from polymers and catalyst to food ingredients and pharmaceuticals. The low rotational speed of the dryer makes them ideal for delicate and friable solids such as crystals, macromolecules or agglomerated solids. Complete discharge of friable materials is simplified by the cone shaped vessel.
Because Roto Cone dryers have no agitator or shaft seals and only one seal on the vacuum line, cross-contamination is minimized and inspection and cleaning are simplified. Roto-Cone dryers are closed environments and are ideal for active pharmaceuticals and toxic chemicals. Loading and discharging connections can be automated, sealed and purged for operator protection.
Roto-Cone Vacuum Dryers System Advantages
Predictable and Repeatable Results
Dry Temperature Sensitive Products – Because all liquids vaporize at lower temperature at reduced pressures, it is possible to vaporize the liquids at very low temperatures.
Reduced Energy – Since the evaporation of the liquid under vacuum occurs at a much reduced temperature, the temperature differential is increased without raising the temperature.
Safe for Friable Products – The low speed at which tumble dryer operate, just a few revolutions per minute, makes Roto Cone Dryers ideal for delicate and friable solids such as crystals, macromolecules or agglomerated solids.
Low Cross Contamination – Because there is only one moving part, the Roto Cone Dryer is an inherently simple and clean design, which improves yield and reduced cross contamination.
More Complete Discharge – Unlike agitated dryers, Roto Cone Dryers have very little surface area and no agitator to trap product. The simple unobstructed 45O cone allows all products to freely discharge.
Easily Cleaned – The simple internal design is ideal for cleaning with a single spray bar. In many cases, the standard spray nozzle can be used for washing the internals.
Single Enclosed Environment – Active pharmaceutical ingredients, drugs and toxic chemicals are easily isolated in a vacuum dryer. Loading and discharging connections can be automated, sealed and purged for worker protection. The closed system also assures the maximum collection of solvents is achieved, protecting operators and the environment.
Avoid Oxidation – The Roto Cone Vacuum Dryer is ideal for avoiding oxidation of chemical and with the addition of an inert gas purge, an oxygen free environment can be maintained.

Case Study: Roto-Cone Vacuum Dryer for High-Efficiency, Low-Temperature Drying
Industrial Solution for Gentle, Uniform, and Solvent-Controlled Drying in Sensitive Processes
Project Overview
A leading pharmaceutical and specialty chemicals manufacturer needed to upgrade its drying operations to handle heat-sensitive products, improve solvent recovery, and ensure reproducible batch quality. The client’s previous drying equipment was limited in handling products prone to oxidation, caking, or thermal degradation, leading to long drying cycles, product loss, and high operational costs.
To meet these challenges, a Roto-Cone Vacuum Dryer (RCVD) solution was engineered and implemented, offering controlled low-temperature drying under vacuum, uniform material tumbling, significant solvent recovery, and cGMP-aligned construction suitable for regulated manufacturing environments.
Client Profile
- Industry: Pharmaceuticals, Specialty Chemicals, Food & Fine Chemicals
- Process Type: Batch drying of wet intermediates and finished products
- Materials Handled: Heat-sensitive APIs, fine chemicals, powders, crystals, volatile components
- Operational Goals: Efficient drying, solvent recovery, reduced cycle time, regulatory compliance

Challenges Faced:
- Thermal degradation of sensitive materials due to conventional high-temperature drying
- Long drying cycles reduce throughput and increase energy usage
- Product agglomeration and uneven drying are causing rework and quality issues
- Limited solvent recovery, resulting in higher production costs and environmental load
- Manual and inconsistent drying control, affecting batch reproducibility
These challenges impacted product quality, process efficiency, and operational costs, especially in high-value pharmaceutical and fine chemical batches.
Engineered Solution: Roto-Cone Vacuum Dryer System
A Roto-Cone Vacuum Dryer was engineered to deliver high-performance drying under controlled vacuum and low temperature, ensuring product integrity while improving process reliability and throughput.
System Highlights:
- Vacuum Drying Technology – Enables drying at reduced boiling points, preserving heat-sensitive materials and reducing thermal stress.
- Conical Tumbling Design – The rotating, internally heated cone promotes uniform material movement, preventing hotspots and ensuring homogeneous drying.
- Indirect Heating Jacket – Steam, hot water, or thermal oil circulates through a jacket to gently heat the product without direct exposure, enhancing drying control.
- Solvent Recovery System – Vapor drawn under vacuum can be condensed and captured, lowering emissions and enabling solvent reuse.
- GMP-Compliant Fabrication – Precision-polished internals and robust seals minimize contamination risk and support clean-in-place procedures.
- Optional Features: Lump breakers, nitrogen purge, advanced PLC with HMI, and variable speed drives for optimized control.
